Emergency Alter Systems

In Maryland and DC, when the EAS is being tested it cancels all recording on Verizon Fios DVR machines.  I’ve been told that tonight it happened during a playoff hockey game just before 8PM.  This isn’t the first time there has been a problem in that market, a year or two ago it happene during an NFL playoff game.  It is too much to ask that whatever clown is responsible for these things, tells his or her computer to do the tests early in the morning?  Say between 3-4AM.  Ya know?  Like when nobody in their right mind is watching television.  It’s not like the system will behave any differently if its tested late at night.  Talk about Pimdisease triggers. Got the same gripe from a couple of local buddies.

I bet they did it on purpose to prevent folks from skipping commercials.

Dealt with this crap working for a cable provider and it always generated a great deal of anger from customers even though we had no control over it. It’s all handled by FCC regulations and the monthly ones have to be the full alert either between 8:30 AM and Sunset or Sunset and 8:30 AM depending on the month. They are supposed to avoid big event like the Superbowl, Olympics and Presidential speeches but series/playoff games seem to be fair game for whatever reason. I always figured someone had to monitor the test locally so they picked a convenient time from them even if it wasn’t for other people.
